The story behind the Reichstag dome

  • The history of the Reichstag Dome is as fascinating as the structure itself. The original Reichstag building, completed in 1894, was designed to house the Imperial Diet of the German Empire. However, it suffered significant damage during a fire in 1933 and was further devastated by bombings in World War II.
  • After the war, the Reichstag remained in ruins until the 1960s, when a partial reconstruction began. However, it wasn't until after the reunification of Germany in 1990 that a full restoration was undertaken.
  • In 1992, Sir Norman Foster won an architectural competition to redesign the Reichstag.
